“Whatever you now find weird, ugly, uncomfortable and nasty about a new medium will surely become its signature. CD distortion, the jitteriness of digital video, the crap sound of 8-bit - all of these will be cherished and emulated as soon as they can be avoided. It’s the sound of failure: so much modern art is the sound of things going out of control, of a medium pushing to its limits and breaking apart. The distorted guitar sound is the sound of something too loud for the medium supposed to carry it. The blues singer with the cracked voice is the sound of an emotional cry too powerful for the throat that releases it. The excitement of grainy film, of bleached-out black and white, is the excitement of witnessing events too momentous for the medium assigned to record them.”— Brian Eno, A Year With Swollen Appendices (via streetetiquette)
I think that the explanation for what Mr Eno is describing here is caused by the fact the music is the sound of the universe and the universe is ever expanding so the is bound to sound like chaos and distort. The machines can’t hold all the information
Some people used to see graffiti art on the subways in the 1980s as a sign that the city lost control and is breaking down. This morning I had to take a cab because the 1 trains electronic messages were confusing and the conductor had no control over the shutting doors. Then the cab was pulled over by the cops and they were giving him the 3rd Reich treatment. I had to get into another cab. To me this is a sign that my city is breaking down and we the people of the city have lost control over the machine that it has become !
Basqwhat ? (Basquiat) mentioned 6 x on the new Jay Z album …
Some of yall are keeping count of the amount of times the N word is used but I am keeping count of how many rappers are going to compare themselves to Basquiat 20 years after he was eaten up and spit out by the NY art world…….If only yall paid attention to the man when he was alive.
A beat I made on my lunch break down by the water at 9am more like breakfast break! I made this beat on my iphone using the Beatmaker2 app and the Animoog app midi synced. This beat has nothing to do with terrariums, rutabaga pie, chinese crackers nor the amish.
This here is a beat I made on my iphone using the Beatmaker2 app and the Animoog app. Finally got them to midi sync without issues and this is the result of a first kick around with this configuration.
We in NYC live in a place where luckily most people have pretty hip ears. However from time to time some jazz relic crawls from out under their rock that they have been living under since 1950 and utters some bs critic about how “jazz” should sound. It’s amazing to me how most of these folks with their WBGO t shirts and “jazz fest ” paraphernalia think in this archaic manner where music does not evolve not to mention when they hear any raw form or SOLO INSTRUMENT ! with out the aid of REVERB ! or AUTOTUNE ! they reject it immediately !!!!
Do they think Mingus would approve of what they believe jazz is ?
Also do they know that Mingus and other legends like him are ultimately just people and people from many years ago! Pioneers yes however music has evolved since that time hate to burst the bubble of these amateur Nat Hentof’s but some people need to keep they mouth shut especially if they are sonically ignorant to the music that EVOLVED after 1969 believe it or not there is music after Coltrane, Monk,Miles and Mingus. This music is not for you ! It comes with no bad T shirts !
